California’s Disability Action Coalition (DAC) is made up of people with all types of disabilities, organizations, families and allies. Our mission is to organize people with disabilities and allies to protect and advance our civil rights, self-determination and life opportunities. We pursue our mission through education, community building, and advocacy – which culminates in an annual day of Disability community action at the Capitol.
Disability Action Coalition was launched over 14 years ago, when multiple disability organizations and advocates decided to collectively claim our power through action. We, people with disabilities, needed a day to unite, exercise our power and educate statewide policy makers on priority issues.
This statewide mobilization event became the annual Disability Capitol Action Day (DCAD). From the beginning, DCAD has been one of the nation’s largest grassroots, cross-disability events. As the Disability Action Coalition grew, so did the annual DCAD. Every year, there was a Disability Community Resource Fair, an Educational Rally, March and Legislative Visits. DCAD was founded with the spirit of welcoming all people committed to advancing independence, freedom and equality for people with disabilities.
We are proud to announce that 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of Disability Capitol Action Day. To honor the power of partnership, which is what started DCAD, the Disability Action Coalition is proud to partner with the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) to co-host the first Disability and Aging Capitol Action Day on May 23, 2019.
While CARA & DAC have distinct histories and identities, May 23, 2019 provides a unique platform for a collaborative, cross-generational event that will support and advance the rights of people with disabilities, of all ages, and older adults.
There is no time like the present to identify issues of common ground and solidarity. Issues that, if prioritized by our policy makers, could positively impact people with disabilities, of all ages, and older adults.
DAC and CARA are committed and equal partners in 2019’s Disability and Aging Capitol Action Day.
Join us on May 23, 2019, because we are stronger together — California’s Aging and Disability community!
